WHAT IS KARATE?
Karate is a system of self defence originally developed in Okinawa and Japan . the word karate is formed from the Japanese word KARA (empty) and TE (HAND) . empty hand combat.
TRAINING OF KARATE
The training of karate generally starts with various techniques of blocking , punching, kicking and hitting . other techniques includes throwing , balancing , grappling and controlling which helps to win in combat.
KARATE FOR PHYSICAL FITNESS
In the training of karate all possible movements of the human body are used so karate is ideal for physical fitness.
KARATE FOR SELF DEFENCE
The self defence system in karate are identical to combat , so karate is ideal for defending yourself against an assailant with the use of hands and feet , if an assailant was to grab hold of for instance one or both hands you would still have the use of both feet, etc.
KARATE FOR SPORT
Although competition is not every thing in karate , apart from real life combat situation , the only way to test your skills is to participate in competition . this is a tournament where dangerous techniques are removed and a scoring system is applied.
HOW DO I MEASURE MY PROGRESS?
Students are entitled to take a grading examination by a senior examiner after a set period of training , which a set grading syllabus is followed for each level , a coloured belt and a
certificate is awarded if the student is successful to define the grade of the student. With regular and correct training it is possible for a student to attain a black belt in approx five years.

SHOULD ADULTS TAKE KARATE LESSONS?
With the increase of innocent people being assaulted it is reasonable to understand why there is a case for learning self defence, also with the physical movements karate is an excellent way to keep in shape.
SHOULD CHILDREN TAKE KARATE LESSONS?
85%of students training today are children under the age of 15 yrs old . this is mainly because karate training has many benefits for children, especially in three areas of their personalities,
SELF CONFIDENCE
Karate helps prepare a child for life, the children in Karate classes know more is expected of them and with a little help from their instructor and parents, they rise to the occasion.
ETTIQUETTE
Children are taught from the outset that Karate is primarily a /defensive and not an offensive Martial Art. They learn to be positive and respectful of their fellow students, instructor and parents. Soon they become aware that good manners consist of having consideration for other people.
DISCIPLINE
Children react to discipline very well and after a short period they develop self discipline; their concentration becomes enhanced as they develop self discipline and focus their mind on the job in hand. Many parents notice a marked improvement in their childrens power of concentration.
